It is with great pleasure that l introduce Kendra MacGillivray’s third recording  titled ‘Over The Waves'. When Kendra began taking fiddle lessons from me at an early age, it was immediately evident that she possessed terrific potential as a fiddler. She was very interested in learning to play, she practiced and was exposed to the music at home by her mother and father. Janice and Tony. Her strong and powerful bow arm enables her to bring a beautiful tone out of her violin and, at the same time, gives the music that tremendous rhythmic lift that is characteristic of her playing.
It is known that the music came over the waves from Scotland with John (number ii) MacDonald in the year I796. Incidently the nickname (number ii) comes from the fact that John MacDonald purchased lot number II in Lanark, Antigonish County. Kendra’s grandfather, the late Hugh A. MacDonald, one of the pioneers in the recording of Scottish fiddle music, was therefore known as Hughie (number II). Kendras grandmother, Winnie MacDonald, can trace her ancestors back to the Isle of Eigg in Scotland.

Winnie’s side of the family has a musical Iineage as well. And there are musicians on Kendra's fathers side. The phrase 'Over the waves' also applies to his family from another aspect as many of them were fishermen.

Kendra has been making waves in the music industry. Her performances have taken her beyond the boundaries of Canada to many countries of the world. Kendra's music is steeped in the traditional sounds of her ancestors and her music builds in richness as she adds to her styles by using not only the music of the old country composers but also that of many contemporary ones.

As each wave breaks on the shore, the shore Iine changes somewhat. As Kendra's wave breaks on different shores, it will gather in new followers to the music and because Kendra teaches fiddle as well, it has already influenced and continues to influence a new generation of f fiddlers.

Stan Chapman ~ June 2000

My grandfather, Hugh A. MacDonald (1889-1976), Lanark, Antigonish, was a pioneer in recording Scottish fiddle music in Canada on the 78 RPM records, Celtic Music Label, from 1935-36.

Clear The Track is a compilation of tunes he played and recorded throughout the years. The idea for this recording comes from many requests to play some of "my grandfather's tunes", and a recent

interview on CJFX Radio in Antigonish, between Ray MacDonald and my grandmother, Winnie MacDonald, about my grandfather's music. The title commemorates the days when my grandfather used the train as the only form of transportation for out of town performances and recording.

Hopefully anyone who knew "Hughie The Fiddler" and his music will recollect fond memories by hearing these tunes and to those of you who are hearing this music for the first time, enjoy!
