Kendra has been teaching lessons in Celtic Fiddle Music for almost twenty years! She started by teaching group and private lessons in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and St. Anne's, Cape Breton, then moved onto Halifax, Nova Scotia where she gave private lessons at The Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts and then onto Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island where she presently gives private lessons. MacGillivray is also a very popular workshop instructor at fiddle camps across Canada. She taught numerous summer workshops at The Gaelic College of Celtic Arts & Crafts in St. Anne's, Cape Breton and once in Vermont, USA. She also taught at The Pacific Institute of Celtic Performing Arts in Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Ottawa Valley Fiddle Camp in Ontario, Emma Lake Fiddle Camp in Saskatchewan and Parrsboro Fiddle Camp in Nova Scotia. She has also taught workshops in conjunction with festivals such as the Mid-Winter Celtic Festival in Saskatchewan and the Glengarry Highland Games in Ontario. She even taught students a workshop in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Kendra teaches many different types of tunes - slow airs, marches, strathspeys, reels, jigs and hornpipes for example. MacGillivray teaches tunes mostly from the Scottish and Cape Breton repertoires. Most tunes are very old traditional melodies and/or compositions of Scottish fiddlers such as James Scott Skinner and Shetland fiddler, Ronald Cooper. Other tunes are more contemporary compositions by Cape Breton fiddlers such as Brenda Stubbert and Jerry Holland. Every now and then, she'll teach the students one of her own compositions as well. Kendra's teaching style and tune selection has been inspired by her own fiddle teacher, Stan Chapman from Antigonish, NS. On Friday evenings in Antigonish, he taught Kendra in a class along with other noted fiddlers such as Ashley MacIsaac, Wendy MacIsaac (Beolach), Jackie Dunn-MacIsaac, Natalie MacMaster and Stephanie Wills, to name just a few. Kendra also studied Classical violin with Bob Murray, Classical piano with Sr. Rodriquez Steele and Highland dancing with Janice Macquarrie, all from Antigonish. In 2003, Kendra received the "Educator of the Year" award at the Music Nova Scotia Awards. This distinction was so special because it represented so many years of dedicating herself to passing on the music to a whole new generation. Kendra has inspired hundreds of students who are now performing in concerts as soloists and members of bands, recording CDs, teaching students of their own, and playing for their own enjoyment.
